Introduction to IIT-JAM

Joint Admission Test (JAM) is an all India admission test conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. This test enables a candidate to get admission into M.Sc programme, joint PhD dual degree, and other post B.Sc programmes at various IITs. The first JAM was conducted in 2004. The seven IITs and IISC conduct the exam on a rotational basis. The institute that conducts the exam in a particular year is termed as the organising institute.

About IIT-JAM

Indian Institutes of Technology are conducted a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). The objective of JAM is to provide admissions to various M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-PhD, M.Sc.-PhD Dual Degree and other post-bachelor degree programmes at the IITs based on the performance in a single test and to consolidate Science as a career option for bright students from across the country. In due course, JAM is also expected to become a benchmark for normalizing undergraduate level science education in the country.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to fulfill IIT JAM eligibility criteria, candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree with at least 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ ST/ PwD category candidates). It may be noted that the aggregate marks should be without rounding off and take into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined, informs the official website.

Candidates who have appeared or will appear for their last year graduation exams are also eligible to apply.

For candidates who have been given letter grades/ CGPA as a substitute for percentage of marks, the equivalence in percentage of marks will be decided by the admitting college/ institute. Besides the proof for minimum educational qualification, candidates also need to submit a physical fitness certificate at the time of admissions. Candidates found unfit to pursue his/her Science course can be denied admission by the admitting institute.

Age criteria: There is no age limit to appear for IIT JAM exam.

Exam Pattern

IIT JAM exam is scheduled to be conducted as an online Computer Based Test (CBT). IIT JAM exam pattern is such that there are seven test papers in the exam. Candidates need to complete their respective test paper in three hours duration. These seven test papers along with their codes include:

Biological Sciences (BL)

Chemistry (CY)

Mathematics (MA)

Geology (GG)

Physics (PH)

Biotechnology (BT)

Mathematical Statistics (MS)

The medium of instruction for test papers is English. There are a total of 60 questions of 100 marks. These 60 questions are divided into three sections – A, B, and C. Candidates need to attempt questions in all sections.

To understand the pattern of questions in each section, candidates can refer the table below:

Section

Type of Questions

Number of Questions

Marks

A

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Each question has four choices with one correct answer.

30

50

B

Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Each question has four choices with one or more correct answers.

10

20

C

Numerical Answer Type (NAT): The answer for each question is a signed real number. No choices will be shown for these questions.

Marking Scheme

Section A: Out of a total of 30 questions, 10 questions are of one mark each and 20 questions are of two marks each. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark for each question (that holds one mark weightage) answered incorrectly. Also, 2/3 marks are deducted for each incorrect question which carries two marks weightage. There is no negative marking for any question left unanswered.

Section B: Each correct answer in this section is awarded two marks. There is no negative marking in this section.

Section C: Out of the total 20 questions, first 10 questions are of one mark each and other 10 questions are of two marks each. There is no negative marking in this section as well.

Note: Candidates need to select the answer for MCQ and MSQ type questions. To enter the answer for NAT questions candidates can only use a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad. At the end of three hours the computer will automatically close the examination, informs the official website.

It may also be noted that candidates are allowed to use the online virtual calculator in the IIT JAM exam. Therefore, candidates are recommended not to carry any calculators with them to their IIT JAM exam centre.
